My Boss And His Snickers

I find it hard to justify eating chocolate bars, it’s not that I don’t like them, but being on what seems like a permanent diet to keep my weight down, I know if I have one, it will lead to another, then another, then…..

So, when the boss gets his Snickers out, I have to turn away so I can’t see it, pinch my nose so I can’t smell it, and keep my mouth shut so I can’t taste the chocolate in the air (how do I breathe I hear you say!).

Anyway, joking aside, there is something I have noticed about ‘Snickers’ time in our office, in particular what happens to my boss before he reaches for the chocolate, and after, and I’m pretty sure it’s an employee engagement thing.

You see, believe it or not, despite being an employee research company knowing about as much as there is to know about what makes employees ‘tick’ and how to achieve great employee engagement levels, our own levels of engagement in our work peaks and troughs throughout the day.

Now, what I’ve noticed with the boss is, when he has a piece of work that is, shall we say, being a bit challenging, a mist of frustration descends, followed by a sense that he’s just about had enough – he becomes disengaged. Then he reaches for the ‘Snickers’, devours it, the mist lifts, and he’s back, focussed and ready to nail the problem – he becomes re-engaged.

Amazing! – chocolate really does helps employee engagement levels – it’s true I tell you.
