Supporting Essex Wildlife Trust
We are pleased to announce we have become corporate members of the Essex Wildlife Trust. As a result, we were recently visited by Karen Dixon, Corporate Coordinator at the trust, to present us with our framed certificate. She also outlined the important work they do and explained what other companies are doing to align themselves positively with nature in terms of their everyday operations.
Essex Wildlife Trust is part of the wider network of wildlife trusts nationwide and is Essex’s leading conservation charity, committed to protecting wildlife and inspiring a lifelong love of nature. They are doing vital work – managing nature reserves and discovery parks across the county, providing outstanding outdoor education and preserving places of wonder. In total they protect over 8,400 acres of land across 87 sites.
Wildlife conservation is now more important than ever. The world is facing threats to its natural resources like never before – from climate change and deforestation to overpopulation. In the Wildlife Trust’s report, Changing Nature, they note that “The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries on the planet, with damage to habitats and species by people having led to the loss of half its biodiversity.”
Humanity needs nature in order to survive and the current warnings regarding climate change and biodiversity are extremely concerning. We feel it’s really important as a business to be doing something positive. In fact, we feel businesses have an obligation to counteract any negative impact their operations might be having on the climate. Our impact is relatively small but supporting Essex Wildlife Trust is a great way to give back.
We’ll be making the most of our membership and fully intend organising a volunteering day to give back and get in touch with nature. This ties in nicely with our wellbeing strategy too as nature has been proven to have a positive effect on mental health. According to the Mental Health Foundation “People who are more connected with nature are usually happier in life and more likely to report feeling their lives are worthwhile. Nature can generate many positive emotions, such as calmness, joy, and creativity and can facilitate concentration.”
If we all do a little it will make such a difference. So, if you’re not already, why not investigate doing something positive for the world.
