All Work And No Play
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy is a proverb. It means that without time off from work, a person becomes both bored and boring.
Now I’m not just talking about annual leave and the odd day off. Why not take time out of your normal day-to-day tasks with your colleagues to make the workplace more fun? This will generate motivation amongst the workers and help increase and maintain employee engagement levels.
Here are a few ideas to consider – providing the boss doesn’t mind!
‘Decorate Your Area’ Competition
Give each employee a nominal decorating allowance and challenge them to decorate their working area on a particular theme. Or encourage departments to develop an overall theme. Then invite the bosses to judge and award a prize for the winner or winner: a day off perhaps!
Rainbows
Use colour to brighten up the workplace. Paint is cheap—and cheery.
I’ll Be Back
Why not hang movie posters on the office walls, with employees’ faces replacing those of the real movie stars. It can be a great motivator and a great talking point!
Party Time
Celebrate national holidays or major events like a sporting event with parties: a Mardi Gras parade through the office, or a cookout on the premises for example.
Scoff
Revel in success with dessert or other food. Most of us think eating together is fun! Get everyone to bring something into work to share or get the boss to treat you to a take away!
Fancy Dress
Have silly dress-up days based on certain themes. You could incorporate a competition for the best dressed scary character for Halloween for example.
Snakes And Ladders
Put games in the staff room. Set up a chess set for a continuous game or even better, get a ping-pong table set up!
Snap Snap
Hire a photographer for a day to snap pictures of everyone then make a slideshow of the resulting photos. Display it in your reception area or staff room.
The list is endless, and what is for sure, work does not have to be all work and no play – make it fun.
