Green teams and employee engagement. These two buzz words seem to be gaining traction.

Keeping employees engaged, happy and productive has always been a
 priority for leading organisations.

Today, as green
becomes more mainstream,
a
 growing
number
of
employees want to work for an organisation that is committed to sustainability and look for a work setting where the green values they practice at home are implemented in the workplace.

“Out of all those millions and millions of planets floating around there in space, this is our planet, this is our little one, so we just got to be aware of it and take care of it.” – Sir Paul McCartney

Establishing “green teams” in the workplace is an inspiring way for organisations to motivate employees, increase employee engagement and shift strategies towards encouraging and forging a more sustainable path. This is becoming increasingly important as more stakeholders are expecting organisations to alleviate their impact on people and the planet – and shareholders and investors rightfully demand profits. Nowadays, both young professionals and experienced employees wish to find more meaning in their day to day working lives, and by giving the green light to employees to find new ideas in eradicating waste, creating improved ergonomic and efficient designs and finding new environmentally cost effective ways of doing things can pay huge dividends.

Green teams or committees are groups of employees who are voluntarily working to make their organisation’s more environmentally friendly whilst at the same time sending out a message that the organisation’s structure is not simply one where messages start at the top and filter on down.

Green Teams begin by studying and considering the environmental effects of everyday workplace operations and behaviour.  It can be as simple as getting together to discuss observations, like an increase in the number of disposable coffee cups being thrown out in the staff room. Green Teams can start by taking on a few small issues in the office, or make a larger commitment to participate.

Engaging
 employees
is
 more
 art
 than
science, and very
dependent on
an organisation’s
 culture, values and governance
style.
There is no simple formula for success, making increased employee engagement tough territory. Harnessing
the
power
of
green
 teams and
aligning
their

with
corporate
goals
is
 a
