What is an EVP?

An employee value proposition (EVP) essentially defines what employees can expect in return for the effort the employer expects them to put in at work.  It articulates the tangible characteristics of work such as pay, benefits, rewards and what the employee will be provided with in terms of training and resources to do their job.  It also defines the intangible, such as the working environment that is influenced by the values and culture of the organization.

Even if you haven’t defined your EVP it still exists in the minds of your employees and forms part of the psychological contract that the employee has with the organisation. Failing to fulfill the EVP (perceived or defined) can have serious consequences on levels of employee engagement, employees sense of fairness and justice and ultimately their decision to exert effort on behalf of the organisation or even to remain with it!  Defining your EVP and using it explicitly to guide your people strategy has huge benefits however.  In their 2013 Talent Management and Rewards Survey Towers Watson found that companies that deliver a differentiated EVP that integrates total rewards and aligns with the business strategy are five times more likely to report their employees are highly engaged, and two times more likely to report achieving financial performance significantly above their peers.

A well-defined employee value proposition has a myriad of benefits – during the hiring phase it can help prospective candidates to decide whether to apply for a job with you; it sends a clear message regarding the way that work is carried out within the organisation, creating consistency in terms of the behaviours that will enable the business to achieve its goals and objectives.  And, of course being defined, articulated and understood across the organisation it enables leaders to monitor how well the organisation is fulfilling its side of the bargain and whether the EVP continues to meet what’s needed to enable business success.
